Top Tips for choosing a Malamute breeder
Recently there has been a sudden surge in puppy farms and backyard breeders trying to cash-in on this very special breed. A lot of these individuals have no real experience or interest in the breed and therefore can offer no genuine after-care advice to the first time owner. Some of these breeders may own multi-breed kennels yet claim to be a specialist. Many end up in rescue shelters or are put to sleep, these dogs can be a challenge to the dog owner, so please research!
There are puppy farmers all over the U.K. not just in one area so please do you research using the advice below, this advice is not soley aimed at one breeder:
What to ask your breeder:
Do they hip & eye test both the sire & the dam this is the most important piece of advice! If no HIP SCORE & EYE TEST walk away.
Are they a member of the breed club i.e. AMCUK if not why not?
Are they a member of the kennel clubs accredited scheme?
Do they breed several types of dog if so why?
Do they show or work their dogs, if not why not?
Do they cross breed dogs for money as the kennel club frown on this?
Do they have references from other breeders?
Ask them do they mind if you can call AMCUK to enquire about them?
Ask them if any of their dogs or progeny ended up being cared for by AMCUK rescue?
How many of the dogs they have bred are champions?
How many dogs have they rehomed when they have finished breeding from them?
Ask them about the BRS do they put their kennel name on every dog they have bred ?
If your chosen breeder cannot answer all of the above questions honestly then walk away!
The above should give you some idea as to what to ask your breeder, any reputable breeder of an Alaskan malamute would be proud to answer the above questions.
